1. The Problem
Background / Context
DoodleMaths is an educational platform helping primary-aged children build confidence in maths through personalised daily practice. While the core app was focused on children, the company was receiving growing requests from parents and teachers for visibility into progress, especially while on the go.
Pain Points
- No mobile-friendly way for parents/teachers to check progress
- The existing desktop dashboard was non-responsive and hard to navigate
- Feedback showed a strong need for quick, accessible summaries
- Business needed a lightweight solution, quickly
2. The Process

Lean 4-Week Design Process
Design Goals
- Deliver a simple, intuitive mobile experience for adult users
- Surface meaningful trends and actionable progress insights
- Align with existing brand, while establishing a distinct tone for the adult-facing tool
- Design, validate, and deliver within a 1-month window
Approach
With tight constraints, I prioritised lean UX methods and fast decision-making:
- Synthesised feedback from support and sales to define user pain points
- Mapped user journeys for parents vs. teachers, who had different expectations
- Collaborated with stakeholders to agree on timeline, scope, and KPIs
- Researched visual patterns from tools like Strava, Duolingo, and Google Fit
- Created a sub-brand look and feel to differentiate this adult-facing experience
Design & Validation
- Rapid prototyped key flows in low-fidelity wireframes
- Ran usability sessions with internal parents/teachers for immediate feedback
- Iterated daily based on real-time feedback
- Delivered final assets, specs, and prototypes for development
- Supported launch with App Store content and support materials
3. The Outcome
The new experience allowed parents and teachers to:
- Track learning streaks and milestones
- Identify where children were excelling or struggling
- Send encouragement and stay connected with children’s progress

“I travel a lot for work, but I can still check in on my daughter’s progress every day. It helps me feel involved even when I’m away.”

Lessons Learned
- Designing for speed doesn’t mean compromising on user needs
- Visualising progress simply is just as challenging as visualising complexity
- A lean, focused MVP can deliver meaningful value with minimal overhead
Measurable Impact
- 4.7★ App Store rating (2024)
- Feature widely used and cited in positive customer reviews
- Became a strong selling point for the platform with schools and parents
